Comhairle na nOg is an initiative of the National Children’s Office under the National Children’s Strategy. It provides an opportunity for young people, under 18 years of age, to have a say in issues that affect their lives. It is composed of representatives of secondary schools and relevant youth organisations and meets around six times per annum.
In 2014/15 Comhairle na nOg Liatroma:
Took part in the National Showcase event in Croke Park;
Ran a project to support young people from national school to secondary school;
Ran a mental health event with 94 attendees from both sides of the border;
Was consulted by HSE, Youth Work Ireland and NW Regional Drugs Task Force.
So far, in 2015/16, Comhairle na nÓg Liatroma activities have included:
“Lets Go Mental” – this was part of a national event for teenagers to promote positive mental health with music and activities. Sixty two Comhairle members attended this very successful event in The Dock, Carrick on Shannon on 9th October 2015;
Comhairle na nÓg Liatroma AGM was held on 3rd November in the Bush Hotel, Carrick on Shannon. Every school in the county was represented. The theme was “Positive Mental Health” and the ninety two attendees enjoyed a number of workshops including Mindfullness, 5 ways to Wellbeing and Introduction to Song Writing;
Four young people represented Leitrim at the Dáil na nÓg in Croke Park on 27th November 2016. It included workshops, and a Question & Answer Session with a panel of relevant decision makers, including Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan and Minister forChildren & Youth Affairs Dr James Reilly;
Comhairle na nÓg Liatroma conducted a survey in the schools in Leitrim investigating young people’s awareness of homelessness. They launched their findings “Youth Perception on Homelessness in Ireland” on 2nd February 2016 in Áras an Chontae, Carrick on Shannon.
The Comhairle is being run by North Connaught Youth and Community Services in 2015.
