Supports for Individual Artists

The principal means by which Leitrim County Council supports the professional development of artists is through Creative Frame (www.creativeframe.eu), which supports networking for artists in the region and provides a year-round programme of training events and activities. In addition the council also operates a Mentorship Programme and an indiviudal Artist Bursary Programme, the details of which are below.

Artist Mentorship Programme 2019

The Artist’s Mentorship programme is designed to support the development of Leitrim based emerging and established professional artists from any arts discipline who have identified particular gaps in their knowledge and expertise. The programme achieves this by providing funding to a leading professional to help the applicant make the next steps in their development.

A mentor is someone who can help you to develop your artistic practice, provide an objective critique and feedback on your work, or help you to work through a specific idea, no matter what stage of your career you may be at. Mentoring can be very broad, relating to your long-term goals, or changes in your career, or very specific, relating directly to taking the next crucial steps in a vital project. In all instances the mentor is more concerned with helping the mentee resolve questions than they are about solving them by providing information.

The application is completed by the mentee. In order to make an application, the applicant must have identified an appropriate mentor with which they have together developed a mentorship programme and schedule for the agreed fee and timescale. Each programme that a mentor/mentee develops will be unique. While some disciplines, such as literature, may require a greater amount of independent review of work, all mentorships should seek to maximise the amount of one-to-one contact. The programme provides a fee of €750 which is paid directly to the mentor. For this the mentee should expect to benefit from approximately 10 hours of one-to-one contact at €50/hr with €250 provided for review of work. The mentee is responsible for any other expenses that arise in relation to the programme.

Requirements and notes:

-The applicant is the Mentee.
-The programme is open to professional artists* ordinarily basing their practice in County Leitrim.
-The mentorship must be completed before 31 December 2020
-Completed application forms must be accompanied by artists C.V. images/recordings etc. of previous work of both Mentor and Mentee and an outline programme schedule for the mentorship.
-Information submitted will be returned if accompanied by a stamped addressed envelope.
-All applicant mentees must be members of the Creative Frame network (see www.creativeframe.eu.) While mentors do not necessarily have to be members of the network, as an objective of the programme is to encourage learning amongst members, we particularly welcome applications where both mentor and mentee are Creative Frame members.

Applications are assessed using the following criteria –

-Track record (or potential) and proven commitment to high quality arts practice.
-Track record of mentor, and suitability and ability to meet the mentees needs.
-Likely benefit of activity on applicant’s practice.
-Level and quality of planning for the mentor programme.

Completed applications should be returned along with additional information by email using www.wetransfer.com to arts@leitrimcoco.ie before 12 midnight on Monday 13th May 2019 or in an envelope marked‘Mentor Programme’ to Leitrim County Council Arts Office, Aras an Chontae, Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim.
